Glossary of Golf “F”

Club face: The part of the club head, grooved or not, which comes into contact with the ball.

Closed Face: Refers to the face of the club or the stance of a player. Club face: When the club face is pointing to the left of the goal. Stance of a player: when the body is directed by the right of the objective.

Fade: Trajectory of ball from left to right, for a right-handed person.

Fairway: Mowed part between the start and the green.

Feel: Feedback provided to the golfer by the club and his shaft.

Iron: Club with metal head, whose opening varies from lob-wedge to iron 1.

Short Iron: Clubs generally used to attack the green and which allow to make short distances: sand wedge, gap-wedge, lob-wedge, wedge, iron 9, iron 8.

Long Iron: Clubs generally used to perform long distances, especially at the start of the tee. These are the irons 4, 3, 2 and 1.

String: Type of competition that involves a string.

Finish: Golfer’s position at the end of a swing.

Follow-through: Stage of swing after the impact and accompanying the ball, before the actual finish.

Fore: English Exclamation to warn the public or players that a ball is coming towards them.

Fore-Caddy: A player uses a fore-caddy on the hilly course to point out where his ball fell.

Fork: Instrument for repairing pitch on the greens.

Foursome: A round of golf or two teams of two players compete, each player on a team playing the same ball in turn.

Free drop: Action to drop a ball without a penalty stroke.

Front nine: American expression designating the first nine holes of a course.
