Many, understand it myself, have fallen under the spell of Djerba. I’m even Ulysses. After all, this Mediterranean island has long been imbued with mythology. (For those who don’t want to sweat, the bus network is vast or you can rent a scooter or a car.) But for me, cycling allows for greater intimacy with the Earth.

And although there are no tempting lotus blossoms-or whatever fermented fruit they have consumed-that would have tempted Ulysses and his men, there is the sweet scent of fruit trees in bloom.

The swathes of sand is what attracts the most everyone who walks on the shores of Djerba. In fact, the northeast coast with its clutter of seaside resorts and private beaches sees most of the tourist traffic. Instead, I headed further south towards the pavement where I found more solitude along the stretches of sand.
