Golf Glossary “S”

Sand Wedge: Club to get the ball out of the sand.

Score: Number of moves played to complete a course

Gross score: Overall score regardless of disability

Net score: The result of subtracting the handicap from the gross score.

Scramble: Group game form. All players in a team individually hit their ball. The captain then chooses the best placed ball and all players replay from that point. This until the final putt.

Scratch: Refers to a player playing the course in par.

Sole: Lower part of the clubhead, resting on the ground.

Shaft: Another term for the club’s neck.

Shot Gun: Competition during which the parties take place on different tees of the course. An audible signal indicates to all participants that they can start the test.

Slice: Missed shot causing an exaggeratedly curved ball trajectory to the right.

Socket: A missed shot at hitting the ball with the club’s heel.

Square:

  1. Term designating two players tied.
  2. Position of the feet parallel to the line of flight.
  3. Position the clubface perfectly perpendicular to the line of play behind the ball, at the address or impact.

SSJ: Scratch Score of the day. Depending on the climatic conditions encountered during an amateur competition, the par can evolve from one or two points. In general, the SSJ is modified according to the overall average performance of all competitors.

SSS: Scratch Score Standard. Under normal weather conditions, score to be made on the course to be in par.

Stableford: Form of competition against the par, in which the pars are raised according to the index of the course. A net pays 2 points, a net bogey 1 point. Beyond, the player does not score any point and can pick up his ball before the end of the hole. A player playing his handicap scores 36 points in net.

Stance: Position of a player’s feet when he goes to the address.

Stroke Play: A game format where all shots are counted, the winner being the player who scored the lowest on 18 holes.

Sudden Death: See: Sudden Death.

Sway: Displacement of a body part preventing rotation on a stable axis.

Sweetspot: Ideal impact zone located in the center of the clubhead.

Swing: Movement of the club in all its magnitude, from the climb, to the impact, and until the end of its race.
