Golf Glossary “P”

1. Theoretical score in which a course must be played by a scratch player.
2. Each hole is assigned a par according to its length.

Par 3: Hole whose distance does not exceed 229 m.

Par 4: Hole whose distance is between 228 and 434 m.

Par 5: Hole whose distance exceeds 434 m.

Course: Part of the field on which the game is played, usually consisting of eighteen holes.

Shared: A hole is shared by two players when they record the same score. The game is shared in the event of a perfect tie at the end of the game.

Penalty: Additional hit that the player must add to his result due to a violation of the rules.

PGA: Professional Golfers Association.

Pinch: Give the ball a backspin effect by having a “ball-land” swing path.

Pitch:

Practice: Area reserved for training.

First nine (holes): Hole 1 to 9 on a field of 18 holes (Go is also in common use).

Pro-Am: Competition combining professional and amateur players.

Pull: Designates a ball that goes directly to the left for a right-handed player whose curve is less important than the hook.
