Glossary of Golf “T”

Take Away: The first movement made by the club when it begins its climb.

Heel: Part of the head of the club located under the handle.

Tee Two meanings:

  1. departure area
  2. piece of wood or plastic intended to elevate the ball at the start.

Tee Shot: A shot made from a hole, the ball usually resting on a tee.

Tempo: Rhythm on which a swing is made.

Club Head: Part of the club used to hit the ball.

Timing: Action to hit the ball with your hands, arms and body in perfect coordination.

Top: Missed shot of hitting the top of the ball.

Top Spin: Effect given to the ball, which makes it roll on itself in the direction of its flight. Once dropped, it goes much further (equivalent to the lift in tennis).

Trajectory: The direction the ball takes when the shot is struck. Some trajectories are defined:

  1. DRAW ball trajectory describing a slight curve from right to left.
  2. FADE ball trajectory describing a slight curve from left to right.
  3. PULL ball that goes right to the left of the target.
  4. PULL-HOOK ball that leaves to the left of the target, with a right, left trajectory.
  5. PULL-SLICE ball that leaves to the left of the target, with a left, right trajectory.
  6. PUSH ball that leaves right to the right of the target.
  7. PUSH-HOOK ball that leaves to the right of the target, with a right, left trajectory.
  8. PUSH-SLICE ball that leaves to the right of the target, with a left, right trajectory.

Crossing: Part of the swing in which the strike is located.

Hole: Circular 4 1/4 “(108mm) diameter and at least 4” (100mm) deep circular receptacle installed on the green in which the flag rests.
