Sand Wedge: Club to get the ball from the sand.

Score: Number of moves to complete a course.

Scorecard: it is a Card to monitor and record the results of a quartet. The scorecard shows normally the local rules of land.

Scramble: Collective system of play. All players on a team hit their ball individually. The captain then chooses the best placed ball and all players replay from that point. Until the final putt.

Scraper: act of touching the ground and missing the ball.

Scratching: Refers to a player playing the course in par.

Shaft: another term for the handle of the club.

Shared: a hole is shared by both players when they recorded the same score. The game is shared in case of perfect equality in the end.

Short grass: generally refers to the fairway.

Short iron: Clubs generally used to attack the green which can make short distances: sand wedge, gap-wedge, lob-wedge, wedge, 9 iron, 8 iron.

Shot Gun: Competition during which the parties take place on different tees. An audible signal indicates to all participants that they can begin the game.

Slice: Miss stroking a ball making it flying overly curved to the right.

Socket: Failed attempting of striking the ball with the heel of the club.

Sole: Lower part of the club head, resting on the ground.

Square: 1 – A term referring to two players tied.
2 – Position of the feet that is parallel to the flight line.
3 – Position of the clubface perfectly perpendicular to the line of play behind the ball at address or impact.

SSJ: Scratch Score of the day. Depending on climatic conditions during a competition amateur, can change by one or two points. In general, the SSJ is modified according to the overall average performance of all competitors.

SSS: Standard Scratch Score. In normal weather conditions, score to be performed on the course to be in the par.

Stableford: Form of competition against the par, where pars are enhanced according to the index of course. A net par = 2 points, a net bogey= 1 point. More then that the players will have no points and can pick up he’s ball before the end of the hole. A player playing his handicap mark 36 points net.

Stance: Position of the feet of a player when he begins to address.

Stray ball: May be searched for five minutes. More then that, the player is penalized one point less and must play another ball from the last location.

String: Type of competition that involves a string.

Stroke Play: Formula game where all shots is counted, the winner is the player who has achieved the lowest score over 18 holes.

Sudden Death: Form of play-off where the players are tie till one of them wins a hole.

Sway: Moving a body part prevented from pivoting on an axis stable.

Sweetspot: Ideal impact area in the center of the club head.

Swing: Movement of the club to its full extent, the rise, impact, to the end of the curve.
