Glossary of Golf “A”
Ace : Hole in one.
Accompaniment : After hitting the ball, the hands and the clubhead finish the arc.
Address : The starting position during the swing.
Air-shot : Shot in the air, above or beside the ball. Typical error of the beginner.
Starting area: Close mowed surface on which the player places himself to start the hole. This is the only area where the player is allowed to place his ball on a tee.
Albatross : Hole played in three strokes below par.
Alignment : Refers to the position of the body relative to the target, which determines the position of the club face with respect to the hole and thus the direction of the stroke.
Go : Expression designating the first nine holes of a course.
All square : A term for players tied at the end or during a match-play.
Amateur : Golfer playing without monetary compensation.
Removable : Generally refers to an obstruction that can be moved without penalty.
Approach : Small shot towards the green.
Putt approach : Approach shot followed by a single putt.
Referee (federal) : Person mandated by the Committee to resolve questions and apply the Rules (must not interfere in the game, eg take the flag in charge or touch a ball).
Bow : Curve drawn by the clubhead during the swing.
Arm : Fold your wrists up the backswing.
Fore-green : This is the part of the field closest to the green, where the grass is cut shorter than on the fairway, but less than on the green.
Blind : A hole on which you can not see the green of the tee.
