Golf Glossary “M”

Sleeve (or shaft): Part of the club connecting the face to the grip.

Brand: Brand impregnated in the grass by the fall of the ball on the green.

Marker: Player who records a score.

Mashie: Former name given to an iron whose loft was comparable to that of a current iron 5.

Match Play: Formula where only the holes won by each player are taken into account.

Medal Play: Former name of stroke-play.

Best Ball: A game between four players, usually in teams of two, each playing his ball. Only the best score of each team is taken into account on each hole. Also called “four balls best balls”.

Ascent: The backward movement of the swing starting on the ground and ending above the head.

Dead: Ball so close to the hole that the next putt can be considered unmissable. In match-play, this putt is conceded.

Sudden Death: A form of play-off where players are separated as soon as one of them wins a hole.

Mulligan: A friendly American term used when a player gives a second chance to his partner on his first tee shot.

Musselback: Iron whose back side of the head has the shape of a mold.
