Glossary of Golf “B”

Backdoor: Term used when the ball goes around the hole and returns from behind.

Backspin: Retro effect given to the ball by the champions.

Backswing: Backward movement of the swing starting on the ground and ending above the head. We also use “climb”.

Baffy: Another term (old) for Wood # 4.

Balata: Gum extracted from a tropical American tree used in the manufacture of balls. It gives them an inimitable touch.

Ball: A golf ball must weigh less than 1.620 ounces (45.93gr) and a diameter greater than 1.680 inches (42.67mm).

Lost Ball: Can be searched for five minutes. Beyond that, the player is penalized by one point and must play another ball from the place where he had typed the previous one.

Provisional Ball: Ball played by security before leaving in search of a lost ball. If the first is not found, the provisional ball becomes the ball in play, with a penalty point.

Bent grass: Very high and resistant grass that is usually found on links or coastal courses.

Birdie: Hole played in one shot below par.

Bogey: Hole played in one shot over par. Double Bogey: Two strokes above par. Triple bogey, etc.

Wood: Club with big round head used at the start. Most are today metal.

Metal wood: Current name given to the driver and fairway woods with heads in stainless steel.

Fairway wood : Wood played after the start, on the fairway or in the rough.

Gross: Overall score without regard to disability.

Bunker: Hollow obstacle filled with sand, placed on a fairway or around the green
